Did you know hand hygiene can protect you from infections?

or
Protect yourself from infections with proper hand hygiene

If one had to choose the most effective way to protect oneself from infection, it has to be maintaining proper hand hygiene or hand-washing. It is scary to think that germs that cause a variety of diseases can be spread simply by touching someone. Germs also spread when we touch a contaminated surface and then touch our mouth, eyes or nose involuntarily with the same hand. Luckily protection is possible when we use good quality soap like HyAntibac hand soap. Even in factories and workspaces where the employees come in contact with body fluids and blood, there are strict rules about hand hygiene.

At Tork (a brand of SCA) we’re committed to providing sustainable solutions for everyday use and promoting hand hygiene. In fact, you will find Tork toilet tissue, paper hand towels and soaps in a majority of washrooms around the world.

What does hand washing protect you from?

As an easy way to protect yourself from infection, hand washing mainly protects from diarrhea, stomach flu, other gastro intestinal infections, meningitis, hepatitis A and respiratory infections that can get rapidly worse. Knowing the best times to wash hands can minimise the possibility of falling sick and spreading the infection to others. Even when you are traveling make good hand hygiene a priority.

When should you wash your hands?

Make it a point to wash your hands before and after you prepare food or eating, attending to wounds, dispensing medicine or when you look after a sick or wounded person. If you wear contact lenses, wash your hands before removing or inserting them.

Ensure that you wash your hands particularly after handling meat and poultry, when you visit the washroom, before and after changing a diaper, after touching animals, when you have a cold and cough and sneeze, handle garbage and after you shake hands with others. It goes without saying that it is a must whenever they seem dirty.

How to wash your hands?

Hand washing basically consists of five easy steps and these are wet, lather, scrub, rinse and dry. You only need a good soap and water or a hand sanitiser like the Cutan range gel hand sanitisers that are easy to carry. Do the following after you take off any hand jewellery including rings:

• Use warm or cold running water to wet your hands
• Apply soap
• Work it up to a lather
• Rub your hands thoroughly, covering the back of your hands, wrists, under your nails and between your fingers for a few seconds
• Rinse properly with water
• Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dryer
• Turn off taps using a Tork’s paper towel

With Tork, SCA’s range of soaps, hand dispensers and paper towels, it is easy to maintain hand hygiene. They are made of active antimicrobial ingredients that help keep hands clean. If you are stuck in a situation where soap and water are not available, carry Cutan’s foam or gel hand sanitisers. It is especially important to encourage children to practice good hand hygiene to help them stay healthy as this is their first line of defence against infections.
